After the sails were still and the nets were all reeled in and repaired, the English sailors and fishermen would find the nearest pub and relax with this classic dice game.
Tiles numbered one through nine are suspended on a rail, ready to be flipped at the roll of the dice.
Each player takes turns rolling the dice inside the felt-lined box – Whatever you roll, you get to flip any combination of tiles that add up to that number.
Roll a five and a three and you get to flip either the eight tile; the five and three tiles; the six and two tiles; the seven and one tiles; the five, two, and one tiles; or the four, three, and one tiles.
Your goal is to lower your score as much as possible!
If the tiles dwindle down below six, start rolling just the single die. If none of the tiles can add up to what you’ve rolled, then tally your score by turning the remaining tiles into the digits of a big number. (1,2,5, and 6 = 1,256.) Everyone else gets one last roll.
The player with the lowest score wins – Unless… If you manage to knock down the rest of the tiles all at once in one turn – HOORAY! You’ve shut the box! You’re the ultimate winner!
Designed with authentic wood tiles and dice, Circa Shut-the-Box is timeless fun the whole family will enjoy.
